Golf Betting Guide
Golf is a sport that lends itself really well to betting. Even if the sport is made up of long tournaments with a huge amount of players there are always options to bet either in the short and long term.
After all, this is a great tactical sport where the final result will be decided by individual players. Small factors can surely have huge effects on the outcome and for this reason, most high stakes punters are so close to this sport.
The most popular pre-event bet on golf is the outright tournament winner. Since golf tournaments fields usually are very large, this means that the odds for the top favourites will still be between 6/1 and 10/1. If you decide to back an outsider, you can get massive prices like 500/1 or even more.
Since there are large field sizes there are significant each-way opportunities. In a 72 hole tournament, you can expect between 5 and 8 places each way.
This golf market is the most competitive so by looking around, you can find very competitive prices. From time to time there are enhanced odds offers around the biggest majors. When there are similar deals we will list them in our golf event pages and in our homepage.
Dead Heat Rules
It is known that golf tournaments tend to result in more dead heats than any other sport. This is why the type of competition lends itself pretty well to situations where there are two or more players that reach the end with the exact same number of shots. Usually, to resolve this for the first place, a playoff is held. For the second place and below there aren’t play-off so when players are tied for a place we have a dead heat.
Lots of bookmakers do apply the dead heat rule to their each-way bets. So if the number of players that are occupying the each-way places is bigger than the number of places themselves than the stake get reduced.
One of the most common betting offers for golf is the money back 2nd (in some cases even third or fourth). Since those usually do include ties they carry significant value as you can get a refund even if more players are sharing that position.
2/3 Ball and Accumulators
Since golfers play holes in groups of 2 or 3 those are also called 2-ball or 3-ball. Players tend to play in 3’s especially at the beginning of a golf tournament. This is so that proceedings can be faster. That provides an extra opportunity for betting as you can bet on the winner of every 2/3 ball play across 18 holes or even hole by hole. This might be a good solution if you like a player to win their individual battle, but you do not think he has what it takes to win the tournament. 2/3 ball also offers the opportunity to create accas as you can select different winners from the various 2/3 ball matches.
If you are placing accumulators, you should take advantage of accumulator bonuses or insurances as this will increase the value of your wagers. Even though there are specific golf acca promotions, all sports acca bonuses and insurance will work fine.
Since there is a huge field of players during golf tournaments, it might become difficult to predict who is going to win. To simplify things bookmakers are offering group bets. With those packages, players are put into individual groups and you can pick the one that you like most to win that group. You might also pick more winners and combine together into an acca.
Hole Betting, Round and Cut
72 hole tournaments are made of 4 rounds of 18 holes and there is a cut which is made when the second round is over (36 holes). This means that you can place a bet on every round or even hole independently of the tournament. You can also place wagers on what players will make the cut and progress to the final two rounds. In some cases, you will be able to find offers for some players to make the cut in biggest tournaments. Hole bets and round bets are very popular markets in play. Odds might change significantly from a bookmaker to another and in some cases betting offers for those markets will also be available.
Top 5, 10, 20 Finish
A different way to betting each-way on golf tournaments is to back players to finish within a set number of places. Lots of top golf bookmakers are offering those markets pre-event. This could be a great way if you have in mind to back an outsider that might place himself well but that has no realistic chances of winning.
Another popular golf bet is picking a top player from a region (for example Europe, Asia, England etc.). You can also place those bets each-way, even though the number of paid places will be lower than for the whole field.
If you think a player can perform well in the tournament but that won’t be able to overcome some big guns, you can go for the betting without market. In this market the top favourite (s) will be removed so you can pick the one you think is going to be the best of the rest.
Special and Proposition Bets
There are lots of special bets that can be placed on golf. For example, you can bet that there will be a hole in one and similar. Since those bets are not very popular the odds are generally poor. Those are rather fun bets to place so although you can have a few quids we do not suggest to go with large stakes.
Odds and Payouts
Golf is one of the sports where it makes sense to shop around to find good golf bookmakers as the additional value you can get will be significant. Markets are very big and involve a lot of players so bookmakers are under pressure as they try to balance their books. This is why those betting sites that are able to collect more golf bets can be more competitive with odds offered. We have selected a list of golf bookmakers where you are going to get a very good deal.
Similarly to odds, payouts also change massively. The biggest bookmakers will offer around £500,000 on all markets. Some small betting sites, however, can limit as low as £5,000 so worth checking the terms before committing to anything.
Golf was invented in Scotland and it was officially mentioned in the Act of Scottish Parliament back in 1,457. Scotland still has some of the best courses in the whole world. Between 1880 and 1914 the game popularity increased in the whole of Britain. In 1894 it became an international sport with the formation of the United States Golf Association. Since then it continued to grow in all the different states.
Golf Rules Overview
Golf involves a player that has a club which is needed to move the ball from one spot (Tee) to another spot (Hole). The fewer shots a player needs in order to get the ball into the hole, the better it will be. It seems an easy game but it has driven lots of players crazy since it has been invented.
The most popular way of playing golf is Stroke Play. There are a number of holes and the player that takes fewer shots to complete the whole course will win the tournament. There are also other variations of the golf and those are.
Match Play: in this type of golf game each hole is played individually. Each player will face opponents and eventually is the number of holes won that count and not the total number of shots.
Stableford: this type of golf was invented in a golf course in Merseyside. Players are given a score depending on how many shots they need to complete the hole vs the par of the course and the par of the player. If for example, a player needs two or more shots compared with the allotted par than it gets zero points. If a player manages to get four below par then it gets six points. The player who has more points at the end of the round is the successful one in Stableford.
Foursomes: players are grouped in teams of two and the game is scored using either the Match Play or the Stroke Play system.
Four Ball Better Ball: similarly this requires two teams made of two. Every player is playing the hole and the team will get the score of the most successful player.
Greensomes: similarly to Foursomes with the only difference that a team chooses what is the best lie to play from. It then collects the other ball and starts playing from that point.
There are also other types of golf played but the ones we have suggested are the most popular.
Most Significant Golf Tournaments
Golf has a number of competitions played regularly but some are the most prestigious and are called ‘majors’. Some tournaments are also only played every few years. It goes without saying that the most prestigious competitions have the majority of attention from punters and therefore bookmakers are offering the best betting promotions.
