Ice Hockey History

Ice Hockey History

Ice Hockey originated in Canada and spread over the US, Russia and other North European countries. The sport was initially known as field hockey in 1773 but it is likely that the game was played long before that date. The first game of Ice Hockey as we know it was played in 1875 in Montreal. The game started to gain popularity immediately and began to spread to North America. In 1902 the game turned professional and the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League was created. The National Hockey Association was created in 1910 and the rules of the games were further defined.

Ice Hockey Rules

Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is played using a stick and a rubberised puck and teams are made of six players each (one is the goalkeeper). The aim of the game is to outscore the opposition by placing the puck in the back of the opponents net more often than them in yours. An Ice Hockey game is lasting three periods of 20 minutes each. In case there isn’t a winner at full-time an overtime is played. The time is stopped when the game is not on for any reasons. All parts of the body are allowed apart from hands. Teams can make as many substitutions as they like and players that have come off earlier, are allowed to come in again if the coach decides so.
